Week 2 Discussion: Post 2

“You should do what’s best for you”
This sentence came from a conversation with my friend I had about my current relationship problems. I believe that the advice that she gave me was too vague and didn’t lead me in any direction out of my problems. The sentence did not allow me to gain any benefit and just let me sit in confusion. I didn’t settle anything with her advice and instead I sat in the same position that I was in before I even talked to her about my problems. Did she imply that solving the problem would make me happy? Or did she mean that walking away from my problem would make me happy? Her vague statement gave me no sense of direction and further clarification was needed.  She later described the path that would lead me to become a happier me making her statement a lot less vague.

Week 2 Discussion: Post 1

A Subjective claim is based on one’s personal standards. The claim can be either true or false depending on the standards (what they think/feel/believe) of the person making a claim. This weekend I heard various subjunctive and objective claims among my friends and co-workers at work. Last Friday I hesitated to go out with my friends because I felt it was too late and I wanted to get a good night rest for a long day of work the next day. I stated, “I think I want to stay in tonight, it’s already late”. My subjective claim seemed invalid to my friends since 11:40 PM seemed “early” too them. In my position, I felt that it was already late to go out especially having to get up early for work the next morning.
An objective claim is one that is not subjunctive meaning it does not depend on one’s personal standards. An objective claim that I heard recently came from a conversation from my roommate. She stated, “We are out of paper towels”. The claim had nothing to do with our personal standards and how we felt, believed, or thought. It was just in fact a true claim and imposed that buying more paper towels would be a good idea.

Introductory Post

Hi class!
I am now a third year Biological Science major at San Jose State. With my BA in Biological Sciences I hope to pursue a career in dentistry and later specialize in orthodontics (braces for young adults)! Many people think I’m strange for choosing this career path but after shadowing at a dentist office this summer I really enjoyed seeing patients walk out with a more confident smile and can’t wait to be the reason behind it! I have taken a communications class before (comm 20) and I really enjoyed the class and gained a lot of skills in public speaking that will hopefully help me in my future here at San Jose State. Some of my favorite activities are sleeping, eating, and shopping, but most of the time you'll find me stuck in the library studying. Right now my schedule is pretty hectic: I am taking 17 units, which are mostly science classes, working on the weekends, and participating in community service projects throughout the week. If there is anything else you guys would like to know don't hesitate to ask! :)
