Week 10 Discussion: Post 3

Apple Polishing
Apple Polishing is an appeal to vanity. Appeal to vanity is defined by making someone do something by allowing them an opportunity to make him or her feel better about herself or himself. It is basically appealing to the pride or self esteem of a person. When that is reached, the favor would be done because it makes the person look good or feel better about themselves by doing it. Apple polishing is often times used by advertisements, especially when selling products.
The advertisement above is for Pantene. It states “Pantene that’s healthy looking hair”. Their motive is to gain buyers by promoting healthy looking hair. By saying “look at Kelly’s hair, don’t you want good looking hair like her too?” they are using an unsaid premise to make you think about what their product will acutally do to you. The apple polishing technique used by Pantene gains people by convincing them that having healthy looking great hair will make them feel good about themselves.

  1. Hi Kirstie! :)

PERFECT example of apple polishing. Random, but I like saying "apple polishing" a lot more than "appeal to vanity." I find it a lot more accurate. haha ANYWAYS, your explanation for this advertisement was very clear and precise. I agree, Pantene glorifies its products a lot when it comes to advertising. It makes you drawn to the product enough to try it for yourself. Then when you actually try it, it's not really as what it cracked up to be. When I used it, it didn't feel any different than the shampoo I used before. I guess the experience differs with people. Great job! :)

  2. Hey k_tab!

You know, your post made a lot of sense to me. When I was reading your post I could not help but think about all those home gyms they try and sell on infomercials. They always have these shredded, buff guys doing the exercises and they pretty much imply that if you buy and do those particular workouts then you will look like that ripped guy. I think a lot of companies do this "appeal to vanity" thing. However it is still a very useful advertising tool. Anyways... Great post, I enjoyed reading it, and keep up the good work!

  3. Hello K_Tab!
AWESOME example of apple polishing! I totally agree with you with the definition and example. Your definition of apple polishing was very understandable and precise. Also I love your example of a pantene commercial I often see the commercials for pantene conditioner and shampoo which always advertises shiny beautiful glossy hair and I never thought that that type of advertisement was called apple polishing but it makes perfect sense the way you describe it. Also I think the picture of the advertisement of pantene was a great educating tool. I found it very useful to have a visual aid. GREATT JOB! :]
    Keep it up!

  4. Hey! I like how you talk about Pantene for this post. I believe that Pantene does a lot of apple-polishing and it bugs me sometimes. Maybe it is because I know that they are hyping their products up and it clearly does not work like it does in the advertisements. I also know that a lot of people buy this product because they are trying to strive to get that amazing hair that the girls in the advisement have. Most beauty related brands do a lot of apple-polishing as I see in Dove for their soap products or Maybelline for their mascaras. I believe that apple-polishing works a lot on women because they want a product to help them feel good about themselves. Overall great post this week Kirstie !

  5. Hey K_tab!
I liked your post because it was direct and it spoke on topic about the topic that we learned about in Chapter 10. I also found it interesting that you decided to use the Pantene example that was displayed in the book but actually showed a color visual of it. This visual made it easier to conceptualize what the book attempted to describe, so it made learning it much more fun. Apple polishing does work when it pertains to vanity products such as hair shampoos as hair itself is a part of an individual's physical characteristics. Besides who wouldn't want shiny, strong, healthy hair? :]
